AI is part of your life at this point, whether you want it to be or not. If you search on Google, their AI system will try to help by showing results above even the sponsored ads. As I type emails in Gmail, it tries to help me by anticipating words to try to finish my thoughts for me. Many people and companies are now actively seeking AI uses in almost every industry from healthcare to customer service to security. Advertising and marketing are no exception.
You have no doubt heard of the global technology comparisons of the East and West, but who is actually winning? The answer is complicated. Is winning the tech that was most efficient to create and effectively doing the job, but maybe not with the sophistication of a more expensive and tested version? Or is the winner the flawlessly integrated version with little censorship and extensive capabilities?
The huge brands like Alphabet, Meta, and OpenAI have thrown hundreds of millions of dollars into developing their AI options. These companies have committed to years of tests and trials to create an AI system that has endless capabilities and with training, endless possibilities as to what the technology could be used for. But recently, a Chinese AI called DeepSeek has popped up with a notably lower cost of development.
The key here is the training part. AI uses our human input to continue to grow its helpfulness. If you’re an advertiser and you don’t know the prompt that will help you get an efficient targeting option, someone better at using AI will win that pitch and do a better job on those ads. AI has endless information and possibilities but you can’t gain access to all that information unless you know how to ask for it. As it stands now, AI can’t read our minds and anticipate what we need as it does in the movies. There is still a very human element that needs to see a problem and know what to ask for a solution to be found.
As I continue to figure out the ways AI can help me not only do my job more efficiently but also help me run my home more efficiently with shopping lists, specialized worksheets for my kids, and book recommendations based on my current mood, I’m hyper-aware of the data humans are pumping into these machines each day. Every search we do, report we upload for analysis, and blog we ask to fact-check grows their machine, but it also helps us grow right along with it.
Despite all the information and possibilities, human creativity and problem-solving skills are still essential to unlocking the data. As AI continues to evolve and grow, understanding how to engage and prompt the system for answers will be a key differentiator for businesses and individuals alike.
